Cheagles are inherently magical creatures. The source of their magic is a closely guarded secret, but the effects of their magic are obvious. One of their most useful magical attributes is their saliva.
Cheagle saliva contains a mix of both helpful and harmful molecules; this allows a Cheagle to channel different effects through their licks. Many different stories have been recorded throughout history of the effects of Cheagle saliva. A few are included below to give a full idea of the power of Cheagle saliva.
Healing is the most common use of Cheagle spit. Cheagle spit has the ability to cure a wide array of ailments in humans. Anything from an upset stomach, cuts and bruises, all the way to certain viruses are common conditions that a Cheagle usually has an answer for. It is well documented that before Rasputin was called upon as a healer for Alexei Nikolaevich, a Cheagle was summoned; a Cheagle by the name of Boris was summoned by the Russian royal family to provide healing to the young Tsarevich. However magical Cheagle spit may be, healing the young boy’s hemophilia was outside the capabilities of Cheagle spit. Boris told the Tsar and Tsarina as much, then continued on his way. Boris went on to have quite a colorful life when shortly after he moved to the far east of Russia and had some involvement in the Russo-Japanese war.
The reason that Boris was summoned in the first place is that he had a very successful record of healing other ailments. Boris’ main specialty was the prevention of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome). In the city where Boris lived, he had daily rounds in his neighborhood before dusk where he would visit up to 100 houses and gently lick each child in the house before bedtime. It was noticeable to the community and health experts at the time that the incident rate of SIDS in this community was half that of neighboring districts. This caught the attention of the royal family which led to his summons.
Cheagles are indeed heroic and Boris is a shining example of the heights of their altruism. However, Cheagle saliva also holds the capacity for harm. Similar to their healing capabilities, the extent of harm that can be caused by Cheagle spit is relatively mild. The worst documented case of harm by Cheagle spit was a Cheagle who was able to induce a severe hallucinogenic state lasting nearly 48 hours. The person experiencing the hallucinations was hired to dock a Cheagle’s tail; in self defense the Cheagle turned and provided a vigorous series of licks to the person’s exposed hand which induced the hallucinations in less than a minute. The Cheagle escaped unharmed and enjoyed it’s full tail for the rest of it’s days.
Other common harmful effects induced by Cheagle spit includes upset stomachs, unfocused eyes, extreme drowsiness, runny noses, and in some cases ear leakage. Cheagles have some degree of control over what effects they are able to impart in their saliva, but it’s commonly thought that they don’t possess complete control. The exact mechanism by which a Cheagle controls which effect is currently unknown.
I hope that this information on Cheagle saliva puts at ease anyone who had heard of the magical powers of Cheagles. As is often demonstrated, Cheagles generally do not use their magic in harming others, they much prefer using their magic altruistically. However, Cheagles do tend to be pranksters and it’s not above them to give you mild cold symptoms so that you’ll stay home from work and snuggle with them.
